History

Santa Cruz County was founded in 1850, when California

became a federal state. Originally the county was called

"Branicforte", after the name of a Spanish village founded in

the region in 1797. It was later named after the Santa Cruz

Mission. "Santa Cruz" means "holy cross" in Spanish.

In Santa Cruz County, there are two National Historic Landmarks, the California Powderworks Bridge and the Santa Cruz Looff Carousel and Roller Coaster. A total of 45 buildings and sites of the counties are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
