History

The territory of the county was originally inhabited for

hundreds of years by the Amerindian tribe of Chumash.

It was the Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino who

named the Santa Barbara region when he discovered

his coast in 1602 as he entered the region on December

4th, the feast day of Santa Barbara. However, the region

had already been visited by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.

The Santa Barbara Mission was also founded December 4th 1786 in what is today Santa Barbara, which gave its name to the county. This one is one of the original counties of the state and was created in 1850. Portions of its territory were given to the county of Ventura in 1872.

There is a great difference between the northern and southern parts of the county, especially at the economic and political levels. In 1978, several residents of the northern region launched an action that would have created a Los Padres County from their region, but this effort had no result. More recently, another proposal for secession was heard, which would create a Mission County; and the county created a commission to verify the viability of this application.  So far nothing has come from this proposition.

According to the Census Bureau, Santa Barbara County has a total area of ​​9,813.5 km², of which 7,088'8 km² is land and 2,724'7 km² (0.26%) is water.
