History

Father Francisco Dumetz named these lands

San Bernardino in honor of St. Bernardin of Siena, on

the feast of the saint (May 20, 1810). The county was

formed from several parts of Los Angeles County in

1853. Parts of its territory were given to the county of

Riverside in 1893. 

Geography

The county has a total area of 52,073 km2. It is divided

into three main regions: the Mojave Desert, the

San Bernardino Mountains and the San Bernardino Valley. The greater part of the county is desert.
